Bradley Whitford back to NBC for buddy sitcom

November 2, 2008

B WhitfordI like Bradley Whitford. Chances are you like Bradley Whitford, too. Who doesn’t like Bradley Whitford? So, the news this day that the Emmy winning star, an NBC favorite from The West Wing — and to a lesser-extent Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (although I think he was the ideal thing on that program) — is back at work for the network is a good thing. Whitford will produce and star in Off Duty, a buddy comedy series opposite Romany Malco.

It’ll be a single-camera style comedy, telling the story of a veteran, once legendary police detective who has fallen on hard times. He’s then paired up with a younger up-and-comer, a straight shooter, played by Malco.

Fey, HammOK, so his name isn’t going to be Don Draper, unless Liz Lemon finds a time machine at NBC and goes back in time, but it looks like Mad Men’s Jon Hamm is coming to 30 Rock.

Hamm is in negotiations to play Liz’s boyfriend on several episodes of the NBC sitcom later this season. This is coming off of Hamm’s great turn as host of Saturday Night Live last week. The worlds of SNL, Mad Men, and 30 Rock are coming together, and it’s all kinds of awesomeness.

David Tennant’s Doctor will be dying

October 30, 2008

The Doctor and MarthaYou don’t get much more official than an announcement from the BBC. David Tennant will be leaving the lead role in Doctor Who at the end of the 2009 specials.

It kind of makes sense. That’s when the changeover from Russell T. Davies to Steven Moffat takes place. If one was going to leave the show, that would be the time. Still, Tennant was utterly amazing in the role. Even when the episode was crap, his young enthusiasm made the character always a pleasure to watch. His love for the role and the character always shone through. It’s probably best for him to leave while the fans are wanting more and he hasn’t worn out his welcome.

NBC’s Kings snags Macaulay Culkin

October 28, 2008

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Casting, Reality-Free

Chris EganYou see this picture? That’s Christopher Egan in NBC’s new midseason drama Kings. He’ll be playing a David-like character — as in David versus Goliath — when the series debuts later this year or in early 2009. And in an interesting casting coup reported by EW’s Michael Ausiello, Macaulay Culkin has been cast on Kings as King Silas’ nephew. The king, by the way, is the formidable Ian McShane. Joel reported just how formidable McShane is at last summer’s TCA.

Culkin is a long way from the adorable Kevin McAllister in the Home Alone movies, but he’s still got that charismatic appeal.
