This has been a year of highest grossing movies. Some movies made records and some lived up to their predecessors. This decade has been very generous to comic based movies. A few decades ago, people would not be much interested in movies that saved a flying city or a titan planning to erase half the universe with a snap or a man on a killing spree after some people killed his beloved dog. But this year, all these stories have got the limelight. And it would not be wrong to say that all these movies have changed the cinema going experience and made it much better for their audience. The shocking thing is that some movies have broken records that seemed impossible a few years ago. We have gathered a list of highest grossing movies of the year 2019. So here are the 2019’s top highest grossing movies worldwide:

10: It – Chapter Two

Release Date: September 6, 2019

Worldwide Gross: $ 466 Million

The Loser Club defeated Pennywise the clown in the first installment and he was back after 27 years in the second one too. The audience loves Stephen King’s stories and they wanted to see what happened after the first part. And after seeing the reviews and the box office chart, we can guess how the story goes. Fans were surely not disappointed with this movie. The one liner goes like this, ‘A shape shifting clown terrorizing the neighborhood and some kids stopping him by overcoming their fear.’ The movie earned $211 Million domestically and $466 Million worldwide making it one of the highest grossing movies worldwide. It got mixed reviews from audience and the critics. Some liked it and some said the first one was better. On Rotten Tomatoes, it gathered the score of 62% making it fresh and on IMDb, it got a rating of 6.8/10

9: How to Train Your Dragon – The Hidden World

This franchise has produced blockbuster movies continuously for its viewers. A tale of a Norse teenager named Hiccup who befriended a dragon Toothless while his people fought dragons all their life. The movie crew has produced an engaging story in the third installment too. In this installment, the story continues from the second movie and all the humans and dragons are living peacefully while Hiccup who is now the clan leader seems attracted to a girl named Astrid. Toothless also met a creature who got his attention. All was going well but Grimmel launches an evil plan to wipe out all the dragons and now Hiccup has to save his dragon friends by uniting the two clans and find a hidden land known as Caldera to save his flying friends. The film grossed $161 Million in the USA and Canada and $359 Million in other territories garnering a total of $520 Million Worldwide. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie got a rating of 91% with 244 reviews and an average rating of 7.5/10 on IMDb. With its box-office success, a fourth installment might be on its way.

8: Fast & Furious presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Fast & Furious franchise has been a fun franchise for car lovers. But the franchise did not only stop on cars and races but it went on to fight international threats with new technology and heavy machinery. They flew cars in the sky and pulled stunts with helicopters and submarines in Russia and jumped cars from one building to another in Dubai. And after their 8th installment “Fate of the Furious”, they released a spin off movie with two leading action stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham and they have to prevent the world from a super villain (Idris Elba) who has Superman-like powers. Yes, this is the plot of this movie. With its first trailer, everybody knew that it would be a mindless action movie that will be a good popcorn flick. After all we all need a break from our real lives. Everybody knows that the movie with a grand cast like The Rock, Jason and Idris and a cameo appearance from Ryan Reynolds who has given major blockbusters movies Deadpool and Deadpool 2 will rule the box-office and the movie did exactly. The movie grossed $165 Million domestically and $722 Million worldwide. It gathered a rating of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.8/10 on IMDb. With a tremendous response to this spin-off, we might see another team up these two rookies. The reports are that a 10th installment of Fast & Furious is in development already that includes another Wrestling Star John Cena and some new members in the Toretto Family.

7: Joker

Worldwide Gross: $ 1.01 Billion

Joker is the best and most meaningful villain in the comic-verse. It has also been portrayed by some brilliant actors like Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger. This time, Joaquin Phoenix played the role or we can say nailed the role. Fans waited for almost a year to watch this masterpiece and they were not disappointed after all. Todd Phillips (Director) wanted to do an origin story for the Joker and he came up with this movie. The dark and gritty story of a stage performer fighting his inner devils. Many people said that this movie is portraying depression and its extreme actions and it will bring chaos in the society. But guess they were wrong after all. The audience fully supported the movie and appreciated the acting and direction. Fans are happy with DC as after Justice League, they are heading in the right direction. The movie grossed $323 Million domestically and $1.01 Billion worldwide making it the first R-Rated movie to get into one billion club. It got positive reviews from the fans and mixed reviews from the critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it gathered a score of 69% and on IMDb it has a rating of 8.8/10. In recent reports, Todd Phillips has announced that they have started working on its sequel but the release date is not final yet.

6: Aladdin

Disney has got the best marketing strategy this year. They are remaking all the cult classic movies from the 90’s to hook people with nostalgia. And this has been working in their favor. All of their remakes have made a good amount of money so far. Aladdin has also not disappointed its fans. People loved Will Smith as Genie and they also appreciated the story line and the actors portraying the roles of Aladdin (Mena Massoud), Jasmine (Naomi Scott) and Jafar (Marwan Kenzari). It grossed $354 Million domestically and a whopping $1.03 Billion worldwide. Critics gave it mixed reviews and it got a score of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes that made the movie rotten but the audience gave it 94% making it the fan favorite and it also got 7.1/10 on IMDb. The clash between critics and fans is not a new thing but it’s up to you whether you liked the movie or not. No matter what others say, but for the audience, it seems like it was the movie they wanted.

5: Toy Story 4

This movie is the proof that Disney is still rocking the animated genre. The know how to hit the strings of people’s hearts. Toy Story franchise becomes better with every installment it produces. The fourth installment in the franchise has also maintained the quality of its predecessors. After a long wait of fans, Disney brought back the most beloved kids movie. And this time, elders went to watch it too as it was also a part of their childhood. A mix of good writing, animation and nostalgia resulted in Toy Story 4. It made around $433 Million domestically and $1.07 Billion worldwide. This is the only animated movie this year that has touched the billion mark. It got good reviews from the critics as well as fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, it got a score of 97% and on IMDb it got 7.9/10. We may see another Toy Story movie in the future. As anything can happen when it is Disney.

4: Captain Marvel

Production houses started filming superhero movies after seeing the success of Wonder Woman. Same thing Marvel did. They brought the long awaited female superhero Captain Marvel just before Avengers: Endgame. Fans were hoping to see how Marvel was going to connect her with the original phase 1 storyline. And with the reviews and box office report, we may know the answer. Brie Larson played the role of Captain Marvel and people liked her as well. This movie also had a hype because it was directly linked to the Endgame. The reason may be anything, but it gathered around $426 Million domestically and $1.12 Billion worldwide making it one of the highest grossing movies of all times. It got 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a rating of 6.9/10 on IMDb. After the end of Phase 4, we might see her in the future MCU movies. Directors have also hinted that she might lead the Avengers after Captain America. Let’s see what Marvel has in store for us.

3: Spider-Man: Far From Home

It is none other than our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man who has made up to this list. Well, everybody knew he was going to be on the list. For one, he is linked to Marvel now and second, he is ‘Spider-Man’. And the audience and critics had the same love for him this time too. Fans rushed to the theatres as they wanted to know what happened after ‘Avengers: Endgame’. And surely they were not disappointed. Jake Gyllenhaal aced his role of Mysterio and fans loved his acting. I mean who doesn’t agree that he is one of the best and underrated actor of this decade. It grossed $390 domestically and $1.13 Billion worldwide maintaining the box office streak of Marvel. Critics favored the storyline and most of them gave it good reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it got the score of 90% and on IMDb, it got 7.6/10. Now, after the announcement from Marvel and Sony that they are going to use Tom Holland in both universes, fans are waiting for Spidey vs. Venom showdown. Let’s hope they have something big for us in the coming years.

2: The Lion King

As we know, Disney is remaking all its classics, The Lion King was surely going to be remade, but this time, with real animation and not the cartoonish one. As we all know, The Lion King is known to be the king of all animated movies, it was surely going to break many records as the original one did in the 90s. Director Jon Favreau recreated the masterpiece with real animations and gave fans what they were hoping to watch. The emotional bonding between Simba and Mufasa, the cunning plans of Scar and the hippie life of Timon and Pumbaa, fans relived all these moments again. It grossed $543 Million domestically and $1.6 Billion worldwide making it the second highest grossing movie of 2019. It got mixed reviews from critics and got the score of 57% unlike the original one. It has a rating of 7/10 at IMDb. Disney might make more remakes of its old classics and give fans what they want. Some say that all these remakes are bad and some say ‘Bring it on’.

1: Avengers: Endgame

Well, we all knew who would be on the first position, as it is not just top grosser of 2019, it’s the highest grossing movie of all times breaking the record of Avatar. It all started in 2009 with Iron Man and after 10 years, Marvel has become the biggest and most profitable franchise. Endgame is the result of a huge buildup of 10 years, it all concluded with Endgame. Watching this movie was an emotional ride for all of us. From Black Widow to Iron Man, we could feel for every superhero who was fighting to save the world. Some of them left us, some moved on, some gave their titles to others and we love them all 3000. This movie grossed $858 Million at the domestic box office and $2.7 Billion worldwide making it the highest grosser of all times. It got positive reviews from mostly everyone and fans talked about this movie for at least a month. It got a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.5/10 on IMDb. The phase 4 has ended but Marvel has much bigger plans for the next phases. As they have got the rights of X-Men and Fantastic Four back. Fingers crossed, we are eagerly waiting for the next phase.
